Is This The Best President Jonathan Can Offer? By Bemdoo Hulugh
Under the watch of President Jonathan this country have taken a very dangerous direction that people are asking for the first time since after the Biafra war if there will be a Nigeria beyond 2015. In Nigeria,we have been so used to bad governance that we never imagined it will get any worst till President Jonathan became the President.
Under the watch of President Jonathan, terrorists attacked in the heart of Abuja on independence day. They attacked the United Nations building in the same Abuja and attacked worshippers on Christmas day in a church close to Abuja and they attacked again a bar close to Abacha barracks still inside Abuja, the capital city. Most of these attacks took place before 2011 elections. We failed to see the signs, the man was incompetent.
When President Jonathan won the first election in his life which allowed him to continue as our President beyond 2011,the first thing he did was to abandon all his campaign promises and increase petrol pump price to more than 100%. The people stood up against such wickedness in anger and he was forced to reduce the petrol pump price but still above the initial rate. That was only the beginning of the many failures his government will register in the pages of our history.
Under the watch of President Jonathan, insurgency and terrorism have spread to more than 8 States. As he rightly admitted in his State of Emergency address “it has become necessary for me to address you on the recent spate of terrorist activities and protracted security challenges in some parts of the country, particularly in Borno, Yobe, Adamawa, Gombe, Bauchi, Kano, Plateau and most recently Bayelsa, Taraba, Benue and Nasarawa states”. In those very States that he declared “State of emergency”,students have been butchered in their domentaries, villages have been raided by insurgents, girls have been kidnapped and even our gallant military have not been spared as terrorists have also successfully attacked military bases. Insurgency and terrorism have increased in an alarming rate that many Nigerians can’t believe their eyes. They can’t believe this is Nigeria.
Under the Watch of President Jonathan, huge amount of money developed the habit of disappearing just like that. The multi billion naira fuel subsidy fraud, the police pension fraud, the billions that disappeared from the SURE-P fund and the famous $20billion that is still unaccounted for by the NNPC. Government under the leadership of Goodluck Jonathan stole our common wealth in a way even we have never ever seen before, they have stolen our dreams and allowed those boko haram lunatics to steal our girls.
In Nigeria where we have experienced one failed government after another, this government under President Jonathan have proved beyond reasonable doubt that it can still get worst. With the coming of this government, the old evil ways of government didn’t pass away, rather new and bigger evil was added which is taking this country closer to destruction. Off course, there was unemployment before Jonathan but under him unemployed youth have been massacred in their desperate hunt for jobs. There have been insecurity but under Jonathan insurgents and terrorists have overwhelmed our gallant military who their bravery is legendary all over Africa and beyond. Under Obasanjo, there was the Halliburton scandal, privatisation scandal,National Identity card scandal and many cases of corruption but in this present government money just disappear.
Mr President failed my friend Chide Jaja who was aslo a victim of the first Nyanya bomb blast, when she was groaning in pains in the hospital the President was dancing in Kano and later Ibadan. Is that how a President should react when his country is under attack? Imagine our President was dancing when citizens were mourning those they lost in a terrorist attack! Mr President failed my university course mate Caleb Uloko who went for NIS recruitment exercise and ended up in the hospital as a result of the stampede that killed some people. He failed those who were less fortunate and ended up in the graveyard. Nobody in government was held responsible and all the people got was just empty promises. Mr president have failed to protect Nigerians,he failed to protect those school girls in Chibok and Nigeria is worst of today than the way he met it. If this is the best Jonathan can offer then it’s not good enough.
We elected or were comfortable with Goodluck Jonathan as the president in 2011 because he was humble,he had no shoes,he was a christian and most of all many saw something divine in the way he rose from deputy governor to become the president of Nigeria without ever contesting an election. We failed to look the number of times Nigeria was attacked under his watch because he dismissed it as the hard work of those who believe they are born to rule. If Mr president can’t protect us from his political enemies then how can he protect this country from her enemies? We must not repeat the same mistake again. President Jonathan will not run based on his record for he has nothing to show but the anger, tears and blood of citizens. If Mr president feel come 2015,he will still go to our churches and say he is a christian or to our villages to tell us he’s a minority or blame the insecurity in the country on those who think they are born to rule then he should be ready for a shocker. His disapproval rating is 84% according to #OmojuwaPolls but if you want to really check his popularity then try supporting him on social media or in any forum and see the kind of enemies you will make in less than a minute. Mr President should not dare use the law enforcement agencies and the electoral umpire to impose himself on Nigerians like Obasanjo did in 2003. Nigerians are now wiser and this is the era of social media. Social media have proved time and time again as an effective weapon of our generation.
Thomas paine once said “It is the responsibility of the patriot to protect his country from its government”. When you speak truth to power many see you as an agent of a political party. In these dangerous times we must forget all accusations and call a spade for what it is. Tomorrow history will remember those who stood up to be counted. Our country have been unfortunate to have the worst among us in positions of leadership. We became so used to bad governance that we never thought it could get any worst till Goodluck Jonathan became President. My generation have never seen Nigeria work and maybe the present condition of Nigeria have made us discover the mission of our generation. In our struggle to make Nigeria better, may God grant us the grace to accept with serenity those things we cannot change, courage to change those things we can and the wisdom to understand the difference. Its time we change this hashtag from #BringBackOurGirls to #GoodluckMustGo.
