Bamanga Tukur Barred from Attending PDP Caucus Meeting
The tenure of the Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur may have finally come to an end as reports have it that the embattled chairman was this evening barred from attending the National Working Committee meeting of the party currently going on inside the Aso Rock presidential villa in Abuja.
Abusidiqu and a couple of other online platform had earlier reported that Tukur has formally resigned from the party as confirmed by a member of the National Working Committee who spoke anonymously, but Tukur in a quick response through his media aide, Mr. Olivier Okpala denied the report.
Mr Okpala added that Mr. Tukur will be at the Board of Trustees, BOT, meeting of the party on Wednesday night and will also attend the National Executive Committee meeting of the party on Thursday.
But a source at the venue of the meeting confirmed that Tukur was not given access to attend the meeting.
While the meeting is ongoing as at the time of this report, it cannot be independently confirmed if the Adamawa born politician is present in the talks, but a source said the Wednesday meeting will be Mr. Tukur’s last as chairman of the party.
The source added that the announcement of Tukur’s resignation will be made tomorrow after the meeting of the Executive Council meeting.
As the speculation erupted this week, Mr. Tukur remained adamant, speaking on Monday about the procedure for his leaving office, and somehow boastfully making it clear President Goodluck Jonathan, who has remained his main backer, has no power to force him out. He claimed that he was elected by a constituted convention of the party, and only another convention could sack him.
He maintained that position on Tuesday after a meeting, presided over by Vice President Namadi Sambo.
Mr. Tukur was elected chairman in March 2012 as the seventh chairman of the ruling party, but his tenure has seen the party through internal strife that led to a massive decamping of party members to the opposition All Progressive Congress, APC.
