Are Cybersquatters Really Out to Take on Linda Ikeji Blog? Find Out
Over the past one week or thereabout, one of Nigeria’s most visited website, Linda Ikeji Blog and its publisher, Ms. Linda Ikeji, rated amongst Nigeria’s most influential young women and one of the most successful online entrepreneurs in Nigeria has been the centre of discussion particularly in the media circle.
She and her blog has been hit by multiple allegations of plagiarism with critics allegedly prodding Google to suspend the blog. Google finally acted on Wednesday by deleting the blog published on Google-owned Blogger platform.
Google, while explaining reasons for shutting down the blog said the company takes the issue of copyright seriously, adding that the company belongs to a group of Internet firms that abides by the provisions of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act and other applicable copyright laws.
No doubt, Linda Ikeji broke the rules going by the complaint raised by Mr. Ayee Dee, where the issue originated from. According to him, Linda has in the past days copied his works without permission or attribution and when he tried to draw her attention to it, she refused to respond, but instead continued to copy his intellectual property.
But beyond the fact that Linda Ikeji infringed on the copyrights of Mr. AyeeDee and some other intellectual property owners long before AyeeDee’s issue came up, it thus appear that cybersquatters are actually out to make something from Linda Ikeji, going by the success she has attained an the financial reward that followed it.
Ms. Linda had few days ago claimed that her site came under attack by her competitors driven by envy over her success.
She accused Mr. AyeeDee and other tech-savvy publishers of trying to have her website suspended by Google, angered by her success and her recent acquisition of a N24million SUV.

With particular reference to the second article, it really does appear that there actually are cybersquatters who are desirous of making money out of Linda Ikeji.
Aside the allegation that Mr AyeeDee registered LindaIkeji.com since 2011 and only redirected it to Linda Ikeji’s blog when the lid was burst open, another domain she could have used if she decides to own a self hosted blog rather that the blogspot hosted by Google, LindaIkeji.com.ng has also been taken.
Investigation by Abusidiqu reveals that LindaIkeji.com.ng has now been redirected to GistUs.com, a blog which says it provides information on entertainment, fashion, health & beauty, news and events. If you click the link now, it takes you directly to GistUs.
A quick check on the WhoIs Date of GistUs.com reveals that it was registered in Port Harcourt by one Kanayo Chineme.

It thus appear that some guys may have decided to register domain names with the ‘Linda Ikeji’ trademark, with the intent of profiting from the goodwill of her blog. while this may be a crime on its own if there is actually prove that the intent of the registrants of the Linka Ikeji brand domain names is to cybsersquat (Sometimes, it could be a case f just trademark infringement), it is usually advisable to pay off the cybersquatters, rather than filing a lawsuit or initiating an arbitration hearing, as it is not only cheaper but quicker in dealing with the issue and the loss that may arise. It appears Linda was and is not ready for this and she’s already paying the price with Google shutting her blog down.
However, our take is that the issue of cybersquatting, which Linda seems to base most of her allegations on, because according to her, she is a success in what she does, does not override the fact that shes guilty of copyright infringement.
So why she is lashing out on cybersquatters for registering all domains with her brand name, she should also not fail to realise that those she infringe on their intellectual property also have the right to lash out at her.
