APYF Supports #EndSARS Campaign, Calls For Comprehensive Reform Of The Police
The All Progressive Youth Forum (APYF) has followed the ongoing campaign and agitation for the abolition of the Special Anti-Robbery Squard (SARS) of the Nigerian police. Judging by the varying degrees of the not so pleasant experience of the Nigerian masses, especially the youths, with SARS officials across the country, no one would say the present #EndSARS protest is not necessary or even justified.
However, we see the present agitation against the activities of SARS as an opportunity to extend the overdue reform to cover the entire police force. It is in this regard that we call on President Muhammadu Buhari and the leadership of the Nigerian Police Force (NPF), the Minister of Interior, and the Minister of Police Affairs to undertake a holistic and deep-rooted reforms that will shape a new outlook for our police as a rebranded institution that is capable of discharging effective policing duties in line with global best practices.
We also wish to call on protesters and agitators on this SARS issue to continuing embracing the peaceful approach to protesting while waiting for the government to come up with acceptable solutions that would address the concerns. Civil protection, which is one of the key responsibilities of the police, is not something anyone should play politics with or pursue with any form of sentiment. This is why the APYF, as a virile youth wing of the ruling party, calls on Nigerians to exercise patience, having made their concerns known and their voices heard. The government should also work to quickly unveil a new plan to address the concerns raised by Nigerians who have brought to fore their grievances on this particular issue.
