APC Leaders Fails to Agree on the Choice of Buhari’s Running Mate
Leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who were locked in a late night meeting on Monday, ended their deliberations without agreeing on who should serve as the running mate of its presidential candidate.
The meeting of the party leaders which started yesterday night and continued into the early hours of the Tuesday morning failed to reached any agreement because the national party leader, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, had nominated himself to serve as Nuhari’s running mate as against the choice of Professor Yemi Osinbajo, who was reportedly agreed at several of the meetings held in Lagos.
Tinubu according to report insisted that his faith as a Muslim will not affect the party’s chances in the South, particularly in Yorubaland. He reportedly said Christian fears had been totally allayed by APC’s nomination of Mr. Akinwumi Ambode as its governorship candidate for Lagos.
However, the party leaders, particularly those from the South South and South Eastern states were said to have resisted his nomination because such a Muslim/Muslim ticket would cause untold political problems.
Despite the rejection by the leaders, the South West zone, whom sources said had earlier adopted Tinubu, despite the argument for and against his nomination failed to shift ground.
When the meeting failed to reach a consensus, a decision was made that General Buhari himself should choose the running mate and all party members were enjoined to respect his decision in that regard.
Although the meeting ended at about 12: 30am, it was not clear if Buhari had indicated his choice.
While the ticket may have been ceded to the South West, other regions have not given up hope of picking the VP slot.
Rivers State governor, who was much touted to be a good choice for the VP slot has reportedly shown little interest in the position, while Governor Adams Oshiomhle and the former Chairman of the defunct All Nigerian Peples Party, Ogbonnaya Onu has reportedly indicated interest to be paired as Buhari’s running mate.
The meeting which was attended by General Muhammadu Buhari, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, Rochas Okorocha, Sam Nda Isaiah, is expected to continue today where a final decision will be reached on the choice of the vice presidential candidate.
Some of the APC governors who were part of the meeting include Governors Rauf Aregbesola (Osun), Adams Oshiomhole (Edo), Babatunde Fashola (Lagos), Aliyu Wamakko (Sokoto), and Abdulaziz Yari (Zamfara).
Others are Governors Ibrahim Geidam (Yobe), Kashim Shettima (Borno), APC national chairman Chief Odigie Oyegun, national secretary Mai Mala Buni, national welfare secretary Dikko Umaru Radda, former interim national secretary Tijjani Musa Tumsah and Senator Bukar Abba Ibrahim.
The APC national publicity secretary Lai Mohammed, Senator Atiku Bagudu, Senator Ahmed Sani Yarima and APC national vice chairman North West Barrister Inuwa Abdulkadir, among others, were also at the meeting.
