Aminu Tambuwal – A Psycho-Political Analysis! By Maxwell Adeyemi Adeleye
Unarguably, ever since Aminu Tambuwal, Speaker, Federal House of Representatives dumped his party, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) for the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC), his life has never remained the same. From a relatively known political figure, the nation’s number 4th citizen has risen to become a super-model on the pages of Nigerian sensational Newspapers.
The whole brouhaha started with the illegal withdrawal of the security details of Tambuwal by the obviously lawless Nigerian Inspector General of Police, Suleiman Abba. Abba had sighted Section 68(1)(g) of the 1999 constitution of Nigeria as amended as the reason behind his barbaric action. He premised his argument on the provision of section 68 (1) (g) which states that any elected public official defecting from the party he was elected to another party must vacate his seat.
Anyway, this piece was not majorly coined to discuss the defection of Tambuwal but to peruse his personal idiosyncrasies and political character.
According to what was updated on his wikipedia page, Tambuwal started learning the legislative ropes from 1999 to 2000, while working as Personal Assistant on Legislative Affairs to Senator Abdullahi Wali, the then Senate Leader. Wali was a member of PDP.
In 2003, he decided to run for a legislative seat as representative of the Kebbi/Tambuwal Federal Constituency. He was elected into the House of Representatives on the platform of the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP).
Few months to the 2007 general elections, Tambuwal defected to the Democratic People’s Party (DPP), alongside the former governor of Sokoto State, Attahiru Bafarawa. But when the DPP denied return tickets to former ANPP legislators, Tambuwal swung back to the ANPP, where he eventually succeeded in picking up a ticket for the election.
But then again, when the ANPP governorship candidate for Sokoto State in the 2007 election, Alhaji Aliyu Wamakko dumped the party for the PDP, Tambuwal also followed suit.
On 28 October 2014, Tambuwal formally defected from the ruling PDP to the opposition APC.
From the foregoing, dear readers, it is obvious that the easy going but radical Tambuwal is a typical Nigerian Politician embedded with lack of political ideology and respect for party supremacy.
Tambuwal was a member of PDP between 1999 to 2003. In 2003, he was elected into the House of Representatives on the platform of ANPP. In 2007, he moved to DPP. However, when he couldn’t get what he wanted in DPP, he ran back to ANPP. In same 2007, Tambuwal defected back to the PDP. Tambuwal has made history as the first Nigerian Politician that joined three (3) political parties within the space of four (4) months.
Further more, shortly after 2011 poll, Tambuwal disobeyed his former party’s directive to his party colleagues to vote for the incumbent House Leader, Mulikat Adeola-Akande as Speaker. He formed an alliance with opposition parties, contested for speakership position and walloped Mulikat Akande to a distance second. Today, as usual, Aminu Tambuwal has dumped the PDP that he re-joined in 2007 for the APC. Now I ask, Where next is Tambuwal’s party? LP? APGA?
His Presidential Ambition
Aminu Tambuwal, whom most analysts had fallaciously concluded that he would run for Sokoto governorship seat, on thursday 13th november shocked and proved all students of politics wrong by joining the bid to send President Goodluck Jonathan out of Aso villa. Of course, Tambuwal is constitutionally qualify to run for the number 1 seat of the nation of Nigeria but to me, he has goofed. He has miscalculated. Tambuwal has overrated his goodwill. He has exaggerated his popularity. Tambuwal has mistaken the public outcry that greeted the barbaric and unacceptable withdrawal of his security details by IGP and all security formations in Nigeria as being loved by Nigerians. Tambuwal’s decision to join the presidential contest of the APC has created unnecessary tension within the party in his Northern region favoured to get the ticket. As some Analysts avowed, the young Tambuwal may have been pushed to join the race by those scared of the zero-tolerance for corruption of the leading Presidential Aspirant, Mohammadu Buhari but let me state clearly that as at today, considering the mood of Nigerians, the only candidate in APC that if presented, can send the incumbent out of Aso Villa is former Head of State, Muhamadu Buhari. The isolated masses of Nigeria whom are rooting for Buhari to deliver them from quagmire are now the determinants of victory for those seeking for elective positions not the bourgeoisies. Elections are not won on the pages of newspapers and social media where Tambuwal seems get his popularity from.
In conclusion, I wish to advise the APC leaders to be very careful on their relationship with Tambuwal. A leopard does not change his colour. Tambuwal has the record of dumping his party every four (4) years. His mind has left PDP since 2011. Who knows the party he will be joining before 2019? Tambuwal is unpredictable, politically inconsistent and unstable. Tambuwal is a typical example of a man without character who enjoy the mercy and favour of God thinking that his rise from grass to stardom was by his power and now ready to mock God. Country people, let me be affirmative by asserting that the declaration of Tamubuwal for Presidency was meant to mock God who had despite his many sins, chose to uplift him above his peers. I rest for now!
