Offensive American Movie against Islam Sparks Protest in Jos
The fear of a spill over protest witnessed in some parts of the Middle East over a movie allegedly produced in the US for as blaspheming Islam and the holy prophet Muhammad (PBUH) reared its ugly head in Nigeria as a group of about 50 Muslim protesters took to the streets of Jos, Plateau state today to stage what they called peaceful protest against the provocation.
The protesters who were said to have gathered around Yan Taya junction near terminus however proceeded peacefully to Zololo junction displaying placards, some of which read “To Hell with America and Israel for insulting the Prophet”
Coordinator of the protesters, Mansur Sani Adamu told journalists that their intention was to make the demonstration a peaceful one stressing that “anyone who has knowledge of Islam knows that it is peaceful religion so there will be no harm to any life or property.”
He added that “we are not happy with what is going on, these people always try to provoke Islam and Muslims because they know how sacrosanct our religion and the prophet is to us.”
The protest march was however curtailed soon after it took off as a military Special Task Force, STF, hilux van loaded with armed soldiers intercepted the protesters at the Zololo Junction and blocked them from proceeding further.
The military action was later justified by spokesman of the STF, Captain Salisu Mustapha who said the demonstrators had to be stopped because they did not seek permission before embarking on their protest, adding that ”we will not allow anything that is capable of breaching security in the state.”
