Alleged Boko Haram Sponsor Sheriff Lands At Maiduguri Airport With Military Guards
Former Borno State governor, Ali Modu Sheriff who was recently accused by Australian negotiator Stephen Davis of sponsoring the Boko Haramm sect on Monday landed at the Maiduguri International Airport which has been closed to all forms of air travel including the airlift of Umrah and Hajj pilgrims to the holy land of Mecca.
The former governor’s private jet landed at exactly 5:15pm at the airport o Monday. As soon as he disembarked from the plane, a heavily armed detachment of military guards escorted him in a convoy to his house in Maiduguri.
Sheriff who has been on the spotlight since the revelation by Davis is believed to have the protection of President Goodluck Jonathan.
Both men were seen in a security meeting the President of Chad, Idris Berby when President Jonathan paid him a visit in Ndjamena to discuss security issues last week.
Though the president denied traveling with Sheriff claiming that he only came to welcome him on his arrival, several report and indicates that both the president and Sheriff have a business interest that necessitated the travel of the president to Chad.
While Sheriff goes about with heavily armed military guards, his successor, Governor Kashim Shettima does not have the luxury of military guards.
The Department of State Security Service has said that the former Borno Governor is under investigation, but it is yet to be seen what form of investigation the DSS is carrying out on sheriff when he travels at will and has access to everything he wishes.
The protection of Sheriff by heavily armed soldiers may not be unconnected with the alleged plan the Civilian-JTF in Borno State to hunt him down for plunging the state into a serious state of insecurity.
