Ailing Governor of Taraba State Returned to Nigeria, Smuggled Out of Abuja Airport
The brain damaged governor of Taraba state who has been abroad undergoing treatment for the injuries he sustained in an air crash on December 12, 2012, has been returned to Nigeria. Mr. Suntai arrived in the country through the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja.
Abusidiqu had reported last week that the Governor said to have recovered from the injuries is set to return to Nigeria on Sunday and true to our report, the governor was landed at the Abuja airport on Saturday night, a day earlier than the originally scheduled date.
A group of cabal Funded by Retired General Theophilus Danjuma, an oil magnate who was once a top member in a military regime is said to be behind the latest move.
The plot by the cabal is to maneuver him back into the governorship seat even when he is unfit for office. The cabal around the governor is intent on instigating a power struggle by claiming that Mr. Suntai is adequately recovered from his extensive injuries and is fit to run the state.
A similar development played out in August 2013 when the wife and close political cohorts flew him into Nigeria from Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, where he was transferred to from a German hospital after his condition deteriorated.
“They claimed at the time that the injured Suntai was mentally and physically fit to resume office. In fact, they forged a statement ostensibly signed by the ailing governor in which he purportedly sacked the acting governor’s political appointees. However, a series of investigative reports by SaharaReporters detailing the governor’s continuing mental incapacity and physical feebleness forced the cabal into retreat. The Taraba State assembly authorized the state’s deputy governor, Garba Umar, to continue acting as governor.”
He was later flown back to London’s Wellington Hospital for additional treatment of brain injuries where he has been until his return to Nigeria on Sunday.
Similar to the first incidence of his return to Nigeria, the governor is still unable to walk without assistance. Besides, his speech still falters and is often incoherent. Mr. Suntai reportedly has difficulty recognizing his environment or remembering names, a source said.
“He is too tired, cannot sit down or talk for more than a few minutes at a time, and is not able to remember basic things,” one of the officials disclosed.
His condition not withstanding, the cabal led by Mr. Danjuma, Nigeria’s former Minister of Defense and oil tycoon, in his determination to prevent acting Governor Garba Umar from remaining in office much less taking over power in 2015 smuggled Suntai into Nigeria.
Sources said Suntai was flown into Nigeria with the private jet of Mr. Danjuma at about 9p.m. Sources said the flight which was originally scheduled to arrive Abuja during the day was delayed to arrive at night so that the public won’t see his condition.
But even as Suntai arrived the airport, the cabal played a fast one on friends, well-wishers, the acting governor, Umar Garba and the media who were waiting for his arrival by whisking him away from the airport.
The cabal’s airport delegation led by Senator Emmanuel Bwacha, who had given the impression that Mr. Suntai, who arrived on a private jet from London through the international wing of the airport, would alight at the local wing.
But unknown to the crowd that thronged the airport to welcome the ailing governor, Bwacha and a few members of the delegation disappeared from the scene aided by the minister of state for Niger Delta, procured the help of some airforce at the airport and hastily smuggled the ailing governor into a private car and left the airport.
He was later driven to the guest house owned Theophillus Danjuma in Asokoro area of Abuja where he was allowed to have a brief chat with reporters.
