Ailing Enugu Gov. Sullivan Chime Returns to Nigeria, Hides In Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja
The ailing governor of Enugu state, Sullivan Chime was reported yesterday to have arrived Nigeria after spending 140 days in Londod where he had gone for medical treatment and immediately relocated from a private house where he headed on his arrival in the early hours of yesterday to the Transcorp Hilton Hotel.
Chime who flew into Abuja at about 5am local time aboard a British Airways flight had to relocate from the private residence where he was first accommodated upon arrival to take refuge on the 10th floor of the luxurious Transcorp Hilton Hotel, Abuja. His relocation to the hotel was said to have been informed by his frail condition and his desire to still have some rest where access to him will be restricted.
Chime’s disappearance from Enugu state last year had led to serious anxiety over his state of health. As a result, a group of activists from the state under the aegis of Save Enugu Group had in the past month mounted intense campaign to force the governor return home or pave way for his deputy to be sworn in as substantive governor.
Meanwhile, the group in a statement today said they had succeeded in using their campaign to force the governor return to work. The statement signed by Maxi Okwu, Chief Willy Ezeugwu; and Ozo Igbonekwu Ogazimora said “Save Enugu Group, received with joy the informal news of the return of Governor Sullivan Chime, into Nigeria , in the wee hours of this morning. We are reliably informed that Governor Chime arrived at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport Abuja, on a British Airways flight from London Heathrow and moved to the Enugu Lodge in Abuja .
“We note that this event is taking place exactly one month after we first sounded the alarm of prolonged and unexplained absence. We acclaim this as falling within desired responsive action of leaders in a democracy. If the further information on the frail condition of the Governor is reliable, we wish to state that H.E. Governor Chime did not deserve being hustled out of ‘gainful stay’ in good health institutions if the right things were done first and before questions arose.
“In that respect, we, as other good people of Enugu State stand to hold those responsible for primitive lies and needless cover ups responsible. We wish our Governor Sullivan I. Chime well and full recovery.”
