Adamawa Guber: That PDP Gentlemen’s Agreement; By Nasiru Suwaid
“We have been given a caveat and one thing we have succeeded in extracting from this meeting is that the meeting started with a preamble that whoever is going to contest and if he happens to win as a governor, he will not have the right to contest the 2015 elections.”
-Aliyu Idi Hong, An Adamawa State People’s Democratic Party governorship aspirant.
Like all things done nocturnal, the meeting was conducted in the dead of the night and to underscore its importance, it was a congregation at a place no less eminent, than the banquet hall of the presidential villa, where the Nigerian president gathered all the contending forces, who wanted to succeed the impeached governor of Adamawa, it is also they, who wanted to replace the acting governor, that seemingly does not wish to leave a legacy of being the one who always act out other people’s diabolical plots, thus this time, the kingmaker, also wanted to be the king himself. Generally, such a meeting on who governs a rebellion threatened state should have been about how to secure the prized land, from the destructive activities of an insurgent force that captures territory and maintains it. Indeed, the meeting could have been a contemplative foreboding, about how to conduct an election, when a vast area in the state is under the sovereignty of a sect that has proclaimed deep hatred for democracy.
It is pertinent to note, that the presidential convener of the gathering, has not held such a meeting on the increasingly threatened state before, at least not in terms finding a solution to the perilous security situation in the area or even as a proactive engagement effort with the prominent citizens of the state, in fact, within the prism of the public space, seemingly, no attempt was made of a gratuitous effort to convey a comforting and reassuring gesture of support to the inhabitants in such monumental period of a difficult trial. The opportunity of the meeting being held as at the time, could have been used to discuss the security problem bedeviling the area and a communiqué issued emphasizing support and concern to the multitude of the displaced persons, who have became internal refuges in their own country but all these acts were not done, rather, what was done is to announce an agreement, which bars a legal cum constitutional right of a citizen to stand for an election, over the social pressures of adhering to a zoning arrangement, that was pronounced to satisfy the elitist crave of seeing a kin occupying the government house in the state capital.
It is instructive to note that it was in the same Adamawa state, where an impeached deputy governor who is also a lawyer is engaging in legal phising, which is the institution of a case proclaiming ‘consent’ to participating in illegality and seeking to profit from its reversal, when he agreed to submit a resignation letter to the speaker of the state house of assembly, rather than his principal, who is the governor whom the law recognized as the only party to assent or reject such notice of quitting from office. Perhaps, he had acted in error when he resigned, but wasn’t it why the Office of the Attorney General was instituted, to serve as the government’s chief advisor, on all matters legal, besides, shouldn’t such a learned fellow always be acting at the behest of his legal attorney. Indeed, it is incidences and occurrences like this that bordered on irrational exuberance, which could explain why a seemingly sober set of individuals would spend countless number of hours, negotiating how to stand for an election, in a region under a state of conflict, where most of the inhabitants have become so traumatized as they became displaced and psychologically wounded, that standing in a queue to vote for anyone is the least thought on their minds.
Since information about the meeting came to my attention, one thought that remained etched on my mind is the precedence of conducting political activities in such a place, the poser being has it ever occurred anywhere before and who would mount the stage of electioneering campaign into the nooks and crannies of a theatre of war. Except if it was merely a ruse, as the portrayal of struggling to engage in the process of courting for votes is one big fraud, as throughout its electoral history, the state has never witnessed a free and fair election, at least not in recent times, because many instances abound, where it took days to announce a simple election result of a very small constituency or in the incredible circumstances where winners are announced, when election materials have yet to reach the incredibly mountainous harsh terrain.
The most galling effect is the fact that a seemingly smart group of individuals, could be so classically naïve as to enter and assent to an agreement without a precedent, as the only one that is known before was entered with the convener of the present arrangement, who is the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, which was promptly renounced, rejected and discarded as an abridging of his constitutional right to stand for election and gravitating towards pandering to illegality. The people of Adamawa must reject these class of individuals and such party that could enter into an agreement without a precedent, an agreement that its promoter once rejected a similar type pact as an unconstitutional illegality, indeed, any collection of persons who could display such crass lack of judgment and need I say character, should never be entrusted with the delicate powers of a state governor.
