President Jonathan Rewards Super Eagles Coach, Players with Cash, Land and National Honours
President Goodluck Jonathan has rewarded members of the Super Eagles for winning the 2013 edition of the African Cup of Nations in South Africa with cash gift, plots of land a national honours, thus making them the latest recipients of the honours, that ranged from the Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON) to the Member of the Order of the Niger (MON).
The award of the cash gift and presentation of the national honours award took place in an official ceremony at the Banquet Hall of the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Tuesday night. The
Chief Coach, Stephen Keshi, was garlanded with the Commander of the Order of the Niger (CON), members of the technical crew were decorated with the Officer of the Order of the Niger (OON) honours, while the players received the Member of the Order of the Niger (MON) honours.
The team and technical crew members also received cash rewards as well as certificates pertaining to ownership of plots of land in Nigeria’s Federal Capital City, Abuja. Keshi received N10m (ten million naira) from the Federal Government, while each player received N5m (five million naira).
A visibly elated President Goodluck Jonathan thanked the team for uniting the country with their superlative performances at the African Cup of Nations, and for putting Nigeria’s football back on the map of elite soccer playing Nations.
“On the football field, nobody cares who scores for Nigeria; you can be a Musa or a Moses…what matters is the fact that you are hoisting Nigeria’s flag”, the President said.
The players and technical crew members also had photo sessions with Nigeria’s number one citizen and were intermittently applauded throughout the ceremony.
Nigeria won its 3rd Nations Cup trophy with a wonder strike from midfield dynamo, Sunday Mba, last Sunday in Johannesburg, South Africa.
