Presidency Grounds Gov Amaechi’s Jet in Kano Over Appointment of Sanusi Lamido as Emir
The chartered aircraft of Governor Rotimi Amaechi of Rivers State was Sunday night grounded by the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency at the Aminu Kano International Airport allegedly on the orders of the presidency over the role the governor played in the emrgence of Sanusis Lamido Sanusi as the emir of Kano.
The order to ground the bombardier aircraft that was recently released to the governor allegedly came after security agencies decided that Mr. Amaechi, former Lagos Governor, Bola Tinubu, ex-governor of Kwara State, Bukola Saraki and a former governor of Gombe state and now Senator, Danjuma Goje were instrumental to pressurizing Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso of Kano to ratify ousted CBN Governor Sanusi Lamido Sanusi as the new Emir of Kano.
The state Commissioner for Home Affairs, Aminu Abdulsalam Gwarzo, told sympathisers who came to condole with Kwankwaso over the death of the late Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero, at the Government House, Kano, that the aircraft was grounded by officials of the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency on “orders from above.”
As a result, Governor Amaechi and his and his aides no other option than to travel by road out of Kano.
Governor Amaechi reportedly left Kano around 8pm Nigerian time by road en route to Port Harcourt.
This will be the second time Governor Amaechi’s jet would be impounded by president Jonathan, The first was on April 26th 2013, when the governor and his entourage was grounded for about two hours at the Akure Airport, Ondo State, on the allegations that it violated aviation procedures before take-off. The jet was later seized by the Nigerian government until it was released last week.
